Utilizing an Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant from the U.S. Department of Energy, CDG assisted the City of Scottsboro with developing a gas to energy program at the Scottsboro Landfill. The system collects the methane gas produced at the landfill and conveys it to a 500-kW generator to produce electricity. The City signed an agreement with the Tennessee Valley Authority and the North Alabama Electric Cooperative to purchase the renewable energy generated. The project has significant environmental and economic benefits by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, environmental compliance costs and air pollution by offsetting the use of non-renewable resources.
