Because of the major role that Cunningham Drive plays in the local transportation network, the City consulted with CDG to replace an aging two-lane bridge over Pepperell Creek. CDG began by helping the City obtain funding through the Alabama Transportation Rehabilitation and Improvement Program (ATRIP) before moving to the design phase of the project. To complete the project, the new bridge structure required the grade of the roadway to be raised to satisfactorily convey Pepperell Creek with no change to the current floodplain conditions. A wider bridge structure was constructed for increased shoulder width and future bicycle and pedestrian facilities while the new roadway approaches were improved and widened for greater safety. Finally, new guardrail and end anchors were installed according to current standards for enhanced protection of passing motorists.
